Streets as tools for urban transformation in slums: A street-led approach to citywide slum upgrading

The focus is on the streets and urban layout of settlements, as the drivers of transformation and regeneration. It reviews citizens’ involvement in participatory planning and re-emphasises the importance of mapping through participatory enumeration and locally acceptable forms of social and physical mapping. It covers: basic infrastructure provision, e.g. water supply, sanitation, drainage; land allocation for resettlement and new housing provision; and ensuring security of land tenure within slums, ultimately leading to regularization and legalization. The approach is an incremental one to integrating slums using plenty of examples. The resource is good for informal settlements in LMICs. And it is useful for city authorities, community activists and public health practitioners.
