The role of cities in improving population health: International insights

Examines cities as playing a growing role in population health improvement with the enormous potential to be health-generating places. The report is based on 50 interviews with leaders from 14 cities and draws on international case studies. It concludes that improving population health depends on many factors, including: coordinated action at multiple levels, bold political leadership, empowered citizens, effective use of planning powers and regulatory measures. It might be useful for those wanting to explore how cities and their leaders can maximize opportunities to improve population health including public health practitioners. It is a useful resource for a wide range of cities covering high-income countries and LMICs.
